Probiotics....die off makes eczema worse?
Hi,
DS tested negative via blood (RAST) to all the major allergens and then some and also tested negative via skin.
However, he is on Neocate and has been since he was 7weeks old (he is now 13months). We took him off all solids about a month ago per our allergist and ND pediatrician. Our allergist is not a natural homeopathic doctor.
At both of their recommendations we started probiotics once he had been off solids for a month. We gave him the Kline ones which are free of all the major allergens. About 3days into it his eczema has flared BIG time. Is this a normal thing? or is he reacting to the probiotics? I have heard of the die-off reaction, but DS stool had no yeast but did show an imbalance in dysbiotic flora (he had high levels of S. Aureus and low levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobactur). Could this be the die off of the S. Aureus?
Anyone?
Any input?

Umm, what exactly is in your probiotic? It could be an unusual allergy. My dd's ND recommended a probiotic that turned out to contain rice and dd is allergic to rice (among many other things)....makes her eczema flare. Maybe you have something like that going on?

Hi
The probiotics
Klaire Labs Factor 1
Lactobacillus rhamnosus powder
other ingredients: inulin base derived from chicory root, proprietary polysaccharide complex, cellulose, water and L-leucine
Klaire Labs
Lactobacillus acidophilus
bifidobaterium bifidum
other ingredients" ascorbic acid and reduced L-glutathione in an inulin base derived from chicory root

Both are free from all common allergens including,
dairy, wheat, corn, soy, yeast, gluten, casein. No sugar, startch, magensium stearate, maltodextrim, artificial sweetners, colors, flavors, salicylates, or preservatives. Formulated for the most sensitive individuals.

DS was tested all the major allergens at 10m and at 13m via spt and RAST and all were negative. His total igE was less than 2.
Do you think this might be part of the die-off?
Much Thanks.

Pauli,
How did you find out your DD allergies? via testing or ED?
How old is she and are things getting better?
Thanks.

Testing for food allergies via the skin does not always yield accurate results. You see, the skin is not the normal way food is taken into the body, right? So...it is possible that those tests do not detect everything. Also, not all allergens result in IgE antibodies. Sensitivities, as opposed to clinically found IgE allergies, can still cause major reactions.

Maybe die off. You'll have to wait and see.
I think it could be the inulin causing bad stuff to grow too. I've posted about this before in Nutrition/Immunology 101 thread.
FOS/Inulin/prebiotics do NOT selectively nourish the good bugs only as they so claim. Depends on the bugs you have and what they feed on. And your diet too. For ex. Klebsiella feeds on undigested starches. Proteus feeds on undigested proteins. Did the test say what the S. aureus feeds on?
When you have stool tests like this I tend to think the body histamine reactions are also dependent on the intestinal flora. Histamines are also released by bad gut bugs.

our ND also said that sometimes you get a flare-up when starting something new (i.e. probiotics) but then your body accepts this something new as something good.
