Need advice on preventing decay through diet for 16-month-old
After discovering a cavity in my 16-month-old's mouth yesterday, I'm madly researching ways to make her teeth stronger and prevent further decay. I went out this morning and bought some cod liver oil (Nordic Naturals strawberry for kids) and probiotic supplements (Culturelle capsules) for her, as well as plain goat's milk yogurt (which has less natural sugar than plain cow's milk yogurt), and some coconut oil for myself (since I'm still nursing, and I read somewhere that also helps with nutrient absorption, though all of this information is swirling around in my head and might be getting a little mixed up!) The nutritionist at the natural grocer said that fruit could be affecting her teeth too, because of the sugar and acidity (and she does love eating frozen raspberries and drinking diluted orange juice). But otherwise, I'm clueless about what foods to give her, and what foods to avoid. Can those of you who have been researching this for awhile advise me, please?
Thanks!
Sarah

My son has severe decay, so we've been treating his teeth with fluoride toothpaste. It was a tough decision, but that's what we decided. If he only had one cavity, I would put xylitol gel on the cavity and all four front teeth every single time he ate something.
The foods that we eat for tooth help don't follow the weston price diet, which is something else that you could look into. We eat a lot of calium rich foods, kale, collard greens, oatmeal. We do butter oil and CLO. No juices, no bananas, no sweets for the most part. I felt bad that the boy hadn't had a cookie in his whole life, so around 18 months I started making very occasional low-sugar treats with xylitol instead of cane sugar.
Good for you for spotting the decay before it spread. I strongly recommend the xylitol, I regret that I didn't start that sooner. Maybe you'll be able to nip this in the bud and keep it to one tooth. Good luck!!!!
