xpost: dd pulling hair out
My 6 yo dd is pulling her hair out. I think its stress from our recent move. But she could be singing a song and yanking her bangs out at the same time. I've tried: a hair cut that she agrees looks like a princess, putting her hair up tight all over morning and night, busying her hands, special attention and activities to make her feel good about herself, talking to her about it, etc. I'm so ready to shave her head so she can end this habit, or would that be completely tramatic?? Help, please, I need support and advise!

I had this problem in adolescence. Trichitillomania (sp?) is an obsessive pulling out of hair. For me it was the eyelashes, but head hair is common. It's generally thought to be a symptom of OCD, but stress can cause it as well. I would definitely check with a doctor/psychologist you trust.

I did this as a child. It started out with hair as a toddler, then eyebrows and eyelashes in middle school. I quit with the eyelashes/brows due to people making fun of me. Then I started with the hair again. It comes and goes. I don't want to take meds so I don't have much advice. I agree that taking her to a therapist would be a good thing.
