Is spelt the same as wheat?
As far as food sensitivity goes? I was eliminating wheat with DS this past week but he had spelt pretzels...does that negate the whole thing? We did so well too!! (until today...had an ice cream sandwich without even thinking about it, oops!!)
Thanks

yeah, pretty much.
Some people can tolerate spelt who can't tolerate wheat. Some can't. Spelt is an ancient cousin of wheat.
I found this at the :
Reading labels is a must for the parents of a child allergic or intolerant to wheat.
To maintain a wheat-free diet, strict avoidance of the following is necessary:
Wheat, spelt, rye, barley in flours or other combinations
Gluten
Distilled vinegar
Beer
Whiskey
Malt
Modified food starch
Dextrin
Some celiacs can tolerate oats, and others cannot. Usually rice and corn are okay for the wheat allergic or intolerant child.

Thanks. That stinks. Now I have to do another week of no wheat to see if it's affecting his eczema!!! Argh.

Ds can't handle wheat, but he can handle spelt and all other grains just fine. We can't figure it out. He gets tummy cramps which lead to either very large eliminations or very frequent eliminations (7-8 bm's a day). It's like his bowls need to get rid of it asap. I bake with spelt and barley flour all the time. Yesturday I made homemade chicken soup with this wonderful stock I made. I made it for dh so I put orzo pasta in it and not thinking I gave a bowl to ds. There wasn't much pasta in it, but last night he tossed and turned and kicked me all night long. He was so restless. Then this morning dh sat him in his chair for breakfast and yelled in horror at me to come down and help him because ds had pooped. He had such a large bm that it poured out the side and was everywhere. DS had a fist full, his diaper was full and there was more in his chair and on the floor. Sorry about being so graphic, but this is what happens to him with wheat. Then he continued to have bm's for the rest of the day until his system was pretty much empty.
I consider us lucky because it's only wheat that affects him this way. It might be worth eliminating all grains and then gradually adding one grain to see what happens.
