recurring fever - is this teething?
1 1/2 wks ago DD woke up w/a fever. Low fever most of that day, then fine. She's had a runny nose since then, but so have I. I figured cold or allergies or teething (her, not me, ha-ha). She's drooling like crazy. I can't see any new teeth, but she won't really let me check. Then yesterday she became feverish in the afternoon. High of 103º during the night, no fever by morning. She slept fairly well. Now she's back at it, temp of 102.5º. I feel so awful for her, as she's obviously miserable. But since she's eating OK, her normal self during the day & basically sleeping OK, I don't want to give her Tylenol. Yet I can't help but wonder what's causing the fever. Should I be worried? My Dr. Mendelsohn book "How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of your Doctor" makes me feel pretty good that she'll be fine, but as this is her first illness lasting longer than half a day, I need reassurance. I am reluctant to call a pediatrician, as I'm sure they'll say to bring her in regardless. Any thoughts? TIA!!

Answers:
Yes, teething can cause fever. The inflamation from teething can also cause runny noses and even runny eyes.
If you want to treat with meds, I would use ibuprofen instead of Tylenol because Tylenol does not reduce inflamation-- ibuprofen does.
You could also try Highland's teething gel and some frozen teething rings.
Oh, and my personal favorite-- the baby-safe feeder filled with ice.

DD really likes this when she has a teething fever.

Thanks for the tips. I've heard those feeders are great. Maybe one of these days:)

If she has not been vaccinated lately or had any other "doctor interventin", she's probably teething.
Fever: this is a good article.

I would not call the ped, if she is generally doing all right. She can do without food as long as she is bf. although you said she is eating.
The fever may even be beneficial. Let's hope for the best. Keep us posted.
I used to go to the ped and just get his opinion. That doesn't mean you have to do anything. So, when you get really worried, take her in, listen to him and then decide for yourself what to do.
