Is Benadryl safe for baby?
Poor 10 month-old DD is still fighting a lingering virus (been almost 2 weeks). She's been through fever, lethargy, major congestion, and a secondary ear infection which seems to have been resolved (no antibiotics). She still has the nagging cough and draining fluid that seems to have started this whole thing. She is currently having a tough time sleeping as she wakes frequently with this sputtering, hacking cough. She is taking Pediacare cough supressant/decongestant but it doesn't seem to be enough. We also have a humidifier and HEPA filter running in her room and have eucalyptus oil diffusing in the room. My Dr. suggested 3/4 t. Benadryl but I'm always reluctant to go the route of meds and this isn't one we've ever used before.
Any thoughts? Ideas/advice/experience appreciated.
Thank you!

Hmmm...
I'm not so sure that it is okay. My ped said that its not ok until after a year, but he tends to lean more on the cautious side.
3/4 t is alot. The dosage for six to twelve year olds is 1 t. And my 4 year old only takes 1/2 t and it totally knocks him out.
Why does he think she needs it? Is she having allergies in addition to the cold?
Is the room warm and stuffy? Try opening a window and letting in the cool night air, keeping baby bundled of course. Sometimes cold air can actually be better at soothing a cough than hot air.

Thank you! Well, we used it once here--my dd was about 7 and I gave her half of the recommended dose for her age. Totally knocked her out and scared the H#$$ out of me. My sister had a similar experience with her dd.
Is there an infant version of this medication? I know the liquid we used was for children 6 years and up!
Would sleeping propped up help her do you think? If her cough is wet, I'd think that you wouldn't want to suppress it, but to let her cough the junk out. Or do you mean draining nasal congestion is making her cough?
If it's the nose, you could try a saline nasal spray to thin the fluids--that might clear her out enough to get some rest.
Poor baby.

bed is propped, using saline nose drops. It is children's Benadryl and Dr. said to go with 3/4 t. We ended up giving it around 11pm last night and it did not appear to do anything at all regarding her symptoms or her sleepiness. We started antibiotics today as she is getting signs of infection again (green mucous from nose, eye puffiness and discharge, etc.) It has been 2 WEEKS now and poor thing has just not been able to shake this. I'm sad :(
