Has anyone used probiotics for blood in stool?
My son is 4 months old and occasionally has blood in his stool. He is exclusively breastfed and i have eliminated dairy, soy, wheat and citrus from my diet. Most of the blood has disappeared but he occasionally will have a few small red spots in his diaper and i can not figure out what could be the cause after eliminating just about everything from my diet. :(
Here is my theory... At birth he had Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and was given antibiotics for four days while in the NICU. (It was a pretty serious Meconium issue) I think that maybe all his good bacteria was destoyed by the antibiotics and this has caused him to have digestive problems.
Does anyone know if Probiotics would help him? If so, can i just take them for him to receive them through breast milk?
I read through a few threads on probiotics, but they seem to focus on Excema which he does not have.
Appreciate all your knowledge on this subject. I have been avoiding the Ped., but have scheduled an appointment to get a referral to a gastroenterologist. Would love to have some info to research before that appointment. Maybe i will cancel and try Probiotics first if it works. :1praying:
THANKS

My preemies were on abx in NICU & one developed GI problems for that very reason. I put him on a baby probiotic divided throughout the day-- a little at each feeding. It can take a long time (like several months to a year) to completely fix things up but we began to notice improvement within a couple of days.
My feeling is that the amount babies get via bm is great for normal situations but when there's a problem they may need a bit higher amount via supplementation. JMHO.
Also, if you aren't already, you might think about taking a good multi-vit & mineral supplement just to cover your bases. And perhaps see if increasing your intake of certain fatty acids might help. This page is about GI problems in autistic children, but the info is interesting:

Thanks Amnesiac,
I am taking a multi-vitamin and he seems to be thriving and very happy, but i think i will try to find some more info on the probiotics. Did your little one have blood in his/her stool? It is very disconcerning even though he does not seem to be in pain.
What kind of probiotics did you give them?
Appreciate all your help.

I know that babies allergic to dairy protein can also be allergic to beef, makes sense, no?
I had a friend whose baby had this problem. She cut out beef as well as dairy and the blood went away.
