Use of brandy in homeopathic solution for children..
My homeopath want me to make a solution using brandy. Is this proper for an 8 month old? Today my homeopathy kit will arrive along with the amber 1 oz bottles I ordered. She said to take the amber bottle (1oz) and put 1/4 inch in the bottom of brandy (very special oak process kind) and then distilled water up to the curve and then the remedy. I questioned the alchohol and she said it was fine since I will only be giving 5 drops. What do you think? This is to keep in my ds room for ear infections. We are battling ear infections and I am trying a homeopath before we go to see the ENT which is on April 6th. She gave me a list of remedies to have on hand and wants me to go ahead and have them made up.

THAT is her answer? :eyesroll
Call her back and ask, specifically, why there needs to be alcohol in it. Explain that saying it is "fine" is not an answer, you want a clear explaination of the need for brandy in a baby's treatment.
I am not a believer in homeopathic "meds", (and, not in many mainstream meds, either!). But, I cannot see the wisdom in ANY baby's "medicine" containing alcohol, no matter how many drops the baby receives.

it'll be so diluted by the water that I can't see the problem. Personally I would much rather do that than give the child conventional medicine for an ear infection, but that is just me :)

The amount of alcohol really is negligable.. It really ISN'T a problem.. Most homeopathic rememdies are HUNDREDS of years old.. And been used for GENERATIONS with little to now alteration.. Alcohol is used to make any kind of extract.. It's just a matter of the kind..

Thanks! I do trust her. I just needed other BTDT moms to tell me it was ok. So, I guess the alcohol just preserves it? Or does it "make" the remedy? I asked her in the middle of the night when my son wakes crying if it was better to give the solution or just a pellet from the bottle. She said the solution most definitely. Any thoughts?

Alcohol is NOT inherently a bad thing! Alcohol abuse IS. Giving your baby a can of beer-bad judgement. One drop of brandy? Pain relief, ingredient in med, etc. Wh ydo people assume it is harmful?
This is coming fro ma woman who hates the smell of alcohol and coems from a family of alcoholics. And irealize alcohol itself is not evil.

Alcohol is a wonderful solvent. Things that do not like to dissolve in water do dissolve in alcohol. It does have some medicinal effect in preparations like cough medicines. It also acts as a preservative in preventing bacterial growth.
I do not know why it would be in your homeopathic remedy, but thought I would add what I do know about alcohol.

THe Bach's Flower rememdies are made with alchohol too.. Just an FYI.. Most of the commercially made homeopathic solutions I've seen ARE made with an alchohol of some kind..
Again I think because they are made from extracts of plants and extracts are made with alcohol.. Again usually brandy, rum, or vodka..
I hope the remedy is helping, and you dc feels better soon..

My homeopath also recomends alittle 100% vodka in my remedies to keep it from turning yucky. You dont have to add it there have been times i didnt add it. if you dont add it the worst that will happen is your water may get yucky from sitting awhile. See after you make the remedy in the water label the bottle and keep it. You dont dump it out after she is done using it atleast thats what my homeopath instructs. I have a whole cabniet full of remedies lol. I hope this has helped.
