How to tell? Dehydration??
My DD has had the flu. She has been vomiting and had diareah for 5 days. She had a fever for three days but that is gone now. I am afraid that she may be getting dehydrated. I was nursing her all weekend so I was not as concerned, but now that the work week has started I am beging to worry. She has only had 2 or 3 wet diapers in the last 12hrs. In between that she has had several diareah diapers.
We have tried to push fluids and the electrolites but she doesn't seem to be getting enough. I do not want to have blood drawn if I don't have to ( to tell sodium and pottasium levels). What other signs should I look for???

Sunken eyes and/or loss of skin elasticity (ie, it doesn't snap back as promptly as it usually does).
If she's becoming dehydrated and isn't taking in enough breastmilk and/or water and/or Pedialyte, then you may need to have an IV started on her.
If she'll nurse but isn't liking a bottle while you're at work, it may be time, if at all possible, to take a couple days off of work and stay in bed with her to nurse her. It's a heck of a lot better than having her in the hospital, as long as you won't lose your job as a result. All of my sick days have been to care for my daughter when she's been sick.

Also if she cries but there are no wet tears is a good sign. A nurse told me to check for severe dehydration put your finger on the inside of her cheek, if it is dry she is badly dehydrated.

Just wanted to clarify the above post - no tears is a BAD sign. I'm sure you could have figured that out, but I just wanted to make sure:).
Lethargy is another sign of dehydration, but it is a LATE sign. If you notice your dd getting more lethargic than usual (usual for a baby with the flu, that is) GO TO THE ER.
I want to add that dehydration is a major cause of death and can happen very rapidly. It is nothing to mess around with. If you are at all concerned, it is better to go to the doc and have her evaluated and given IV fluid if necessary. I know that sounds scary but it is much better than the alternative.
I hope she's feeling better tomorrow and keeping more fluids down :).

Thank You for your comments.
Yes I get that no tears is a bad sign.
Amanda is doing much better today. No more vommiting just the diareaha. We are all working very hard to keep her hydrated. I am happy to report that she had two huge soaked dipers over night. Then unfortunatly three more diareah diapes today. She is active and not letargic. So I think she is getting better.
Thank You all for your words of wisdom.

I will keeep posting her condition.

:D
