15 month old with GP - moisturizers?
My 15 month old daughter has genital psoriasis and we are currently on our second round of steriodal lotion for treatment. I just read on this site that one of the most important things in dealing with this is to keep the area moisturized. Currently I am using plain old vasoline on her with an occasional application of desitin (mainly right before she goes to sleep). Should I be using a moisturizing cream instead of the vasoline? If so, any suggestions for what kind of cream might work best.
She had a few dry areas that the dermatologist said might be psoriasis on her arms, so I began using Aveeno Baby Daily Moisturizer and the areas have started to clear a bit.
Thanks! We were diagnosed just last week and I am struggling to find ways of dealing with this. One of the main problems is that I am not real comfortable with the doctor that we have (he just doesn't seem really on top of things). I found a name for another doctor in our area on this site and have an appointment scheduled but we cannot see her until September =( I'm just trying to find ways to deal with this each day because I do not want to continue with the steriodal lotion if I can avoid it.
Thanks!
Kimberly

Hi Kim,
Vaseline is an excellent moisturizer. I find that it helps to rotate brands and to use only those moisturizers that are labled "fragrance free", "non-irritating" and/or "for sensitive skin". My current favorites (in no particular order) include:
  • Cetaphil (http://www.cetaphil.com/Products/Moisturizers.aspx); (I like the kind that comes in a pump bottle, but the one that comes in a jar might be better for the diaper area.)
  • Aveeno (http://www.aveeno.ca/en/products.asp?scid=5);
  • Eucerin (http://www.eucerinus.com/skincare/m...nal/frame1.html) (Again, I like the kind that comes in a pump bottle, but the one that comes in a jar may be a better choice for the diaper area.);
  • Palmer's Cocoa Butter (I prefer the fragrance free formula, even though it can be hard to find); and
  • Palmer's Shea Butter formula (it has a slight fragrance) (here's a link to Palmer's website, you have to scoll down the page for description of each product: http://www.etbrowne.com/products/Ca...px?CategoryID=1).
Finally, I'm not a big fan of the way it feels, but Aquaphor (http://www.eucerinus.com/skincare/m...hor/frame1.html) is an excellent choice for the diaper area.
I hope this helps.

Kimberly,
My heart and prayers are with both you and daughter.. my 5 year old grandson developed his psoriasis about the same time.. there was a newly on the market medicated desitin back them (he is 5 now) that really worked for him, I do hope that is the one you have found.. our derm referred it.. there are also other great creams, ointments and gels that a good derm will try and test before recommending steriods.. in fact, most derms will NOT refer a child that young to use any steriod creams or meds.. I am so glad to hear you are changing derms..
Best Wishes and God Bless,
Penny

kim,,,i'm so sorry for you and your baby....please check out all natural products,,,in the alternative site there is info on all natural products. I soak in Baking soda which helps the itch and calms the P,,,I also add some olive oil in the water and I soak for 30 min.Than I moisturize with coconut oil. If you read on the labels ,,,even some baby products contain harmful ingredients,,,which surprises me. I think you will find some info on good products that don't contain alcohol and other harmful ingredients. Especially in the area your baby has P. please read the labels,,,, before applying anything on your baby.
I don't know if you have a Kohl's store but they just got in a new line of all natural products and they said the baby line is great,,,in fact read what's in the products and i'm sure you can only agree how nice it is...

Hi Kim,
Sorry to hear about your baby.... :(
I think you are on the right track, though...I'd just use baby oil gel, vaseline, desitin (the non creamy one seemed to work better for me) and go easy on the steroids. Your honey is too young to be slappin' on the ol' clobetasol, I'd go find a pediatric dermatologist (is there one out there?) and get some real info on what kind of steroids you could be putting down there. I would imagine it wouldn't be anything stronger than a Class 5 steroid (see the steroid pamphlet in the educational pamphlets section) and watch out for rebounds, strech marks, etc.
Hope this helps,

In addition to creams, I recommend as many massages as you can give your child a day. The healing touch of hands and the improved circulation could help a great deal. Besides it helps with positive body image and feels good!

Kimberly-
You certainly came to the right place for advice...you just have to remember that ps is a fickle thing and different things will work for different people...My daughter Emily was diagnosised at 5years old and was at one time 99% covered head to toe.....the thing that worked best for her was
UDDER CREAM ...we got our at Trader Joes but I have also seen it at Walgreens...it is pretty cheap and feels really smooth not sticky like vaseline...though vaseline worked well also....Fight the good fight and certainly take heart your daughter will teach you a ton about courage and self-image...I know that Emily sure taught me a ton!!!!!
