Kombuchia tea reaction concerns
Hi all,
I just started brewing Kombuchia tea. It is supposed to have all kinds of great health benifits. I have been drinking 4oz. a day to start, and have just increased to 8oz. after 1 week. I have very severe Psoriatic Arthritis. I am actually worried that I will have flair ups from the KT because I read that people with PA should avoid vinegar, and acidic foods. KT is very "vinigary" I have noticed a few scales this week and I'm hoping its not because of the KT. Does anyone have any thoughts/info on this? I don't want to abandon my new KT habits! :(
Any thought would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Kathy

Kathleen,
Have you checked with your rheumatologist? I have read very little about that tea, could it be that it's interfering with your medications? ( provided that your on them ). Maybe you could go back down to the 4oz's a day if you thought it was helping and didn't see a reaction.

Hi Kathy,
I do not have first hand experience with Kumbacha tea, and I was unable to locate any reputable information that described it as being either good, or bad. The FDA did however issue a warning regarding potential dangers during the brewing process. Perhaps you just have a bad batch?

I brew and use Kombucha tea. I have 2 gallons going in sun tea jars at any given time.
It is important to start with low doses, as the tea is potent.
The FDA hasn't posted anything bad about about it, because there haven't been any truly bad things happen to people who use it. I mean in comparison to any other drug or herb.
Kombuchas are a bit unusual, but are used regularly in other cultures where fermented foods are a normal part of the diet, as in Asia. Saurkraut, yogurt, kefir, soudough and cultured buttermilk are similar cultures.
To a new user, it is an unusual looking blob, but if it gets moldy, you will see the difference. I have seen pictures of mold on a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) and you will be able to tell if you need to throw it away.
I've had mine since February and use the tea daily for the enzymes and acididophilus if provides. I also used it years ago.
I am aware that both 'yeasts' and vinegar are problematic with some people who have P, but the particular yeasts and low alcohol content associated with KT are not the bad ones. And although sugar is used in the brewing, much of it has been converted to a more digestable state by the time we drink it.
If you let the KT brew too long it could get too acidic to drink. But you can use it as salad dressing. I hope you got good instructions when you got your scoby. If not, here is a good link:

I certainly have not experienced any problems with my KT.

If it means anything to you I've been drinking commercially brewed kombucha tea drinks (brand name "Synergy") DAILY for over a year now.
I don't have PA but I did have p (ok, do,but it's so minute now) and I believe the teas were/are helpful; they have an alkalizing effect, this is most impotant for psoriatics!
Let us know how it goes...
