can really growth being stunted by weight lifting

Hi! I’m 17, and I’m and I would like to start lifting weights. The thing is that everybody’s talking I shouldn’t bc I haven’t developed yet and that weight lifting could cause growth stunt. Can anybody explain this to me!!!
